Rosie Murphy

Please can you briefly introduce yourself

My name is Rosie, I am a 32 year old parent and I live in Hastings.

Please could you briefly tell us how you became an accountant

This was never what I intended; I actually spent a year at UCL Medical School in London.

After having my son, I wanted something to focus on and learn, as at the time I was not working. My biggest strength is my desire to learn. Having previously studied business studies, I started training with the AAT and within a couple of month, had my first job as a trainee accountant.

What does an average day in the life of an accountant look like?

Lots of client meetings; providing financial information for small businesses; and getting things done before deadlines!

Please could you tell us who or what has had the most significant influence on you during your life and why?

My son and also my passion for conservation

What was your favourite subject at school?

Science without a doubt

What key thing do you do every day to keep you on track?

Eat well and try to get decent sleep

Do you have a morning/evening routine?

Yes, mostly due to necessity as I am a free spirit and don’t naturally gravitate towards routine.

How do you relax?

Meditation, cycling, dance

What was the last piece of art you purchased and from where?

I know a great many artists and was gifted a painting by Robin Holtom, who may be a familiar name to some.

What advice would you give to those aspiring to make a living out of selling their art in 2021 and beyond?

Save during the good times to cover you for any potential periods when things may be slower.

What key piece of accountancy advice would you give to artists?

As above, save for a rainy day. Also use a business bank account to keep everything in one place

What key piece of advice would you give your younger self?

Go travelling.

What is the most important thing to know about you?

Know your top strengths and possibly even more important your top motivators. I recently did some coaching where we covered these areas. This is how I know my top motivator is ‘Spirit’ (I am a free spirit and need freedom) and my top strength is ability and desire to learn.

Please tell us one unexpected thing about yourself.

I am in a TV advert, you may have seen me!

Anything else….

I am an active member of Clean Up Hastings. My Firm also recently adopted a 2 minute Beach Cleaning Station (The one by Goat Ledge should have a plaque with my logo once they are out in use again)
