July marks International Friendship Day on 30th July.
Freedom & Belonging
Freedom and belonging are often seen as opposites: freedom suggests independence, choice, and self-expression, while belonging connects us to people, places, cultures, and communities. For visual artists, this theme offers an opportunity to explore personal stories, cultural heritage, friendship, migration, inclusion, and the spaces where individuality and community meet. Through colour, symbolism, portraiture, abstraction, and mixed media, artists can reflect on what it means to feel free, what it means to belong, and how these experiences shape our lives.
As we celebrate International Day of Friendship on 30 July, we are reminded that friendships can bridge differences, foster understanding, and create a sense of belonging across cultures and communities. This month invites artists to consider the connections that unite us and the freedoms that allow us to express who we are.
