Balmer Down This painting is based on a detail of my 'Crossover' painting of a wider view of Balmer Down. The pattern of interlocking arcs is typical of the local landscape in East Sussex where I live. The palette is chosen to express the evening colours as the sun goes down. Balmer Downs is situated in the South Downs. Anyone who has walked the Downs appreciate that the sends of space that envelopes the downs can be a lonely place to walk. The sea air and the wind, the sight of the distant horizon as you reach the brow of a hill can invoke a sense of isolation and loneliness. But it is a magical experience and being reminded of how unimportant our individual place is on this planet can teach us that if we embrace nature we are no longer lost but part of a larger life force, there in is the poetry.
