Mark Austin
SCULPTURE
Mark Austin is an artist based in the High Weald, where he has lived for most of his life. Deeply influenced by the Sussex landscape, he draws on natural materials and surroundings as both inspiration and medium. Coming from a third-generation background of artists and artisans, he transitioned from a 33-year career in construction to become a professional artist by the age of 50. Largely self-taught, he has refined his practice through study and collaboration with local artists.
His work centres on capturing fleeting moments in nature through three interconnected practices: drawing, sculpture, and walking.
Mark’s drawing practice is defined by minimalist black-and-white line work, often presented in series such as Cuckmere, Seven Sisters, and Windswept Trees. These pieces distill landscape into essential forms, balancing simplicity with emotional depth.
His contemporary sculpture reflects a commitment to sustainability, using reclaimed wood and natural materials such as flint. Works like Flow and Flint echo organic forms while maintaining a distinct visual language; the Flint series is also produced in limited edition bronze.
Walking and sketching underpin his process, fostering a direct engagement with place. Through community wellbeing walks, he encourages shared creative exploration and a deeper connection to the environment.
